Magee now plays a lead role

Life without Jesse Callier may be okay, after all for the Warren High School football team.

Currently a freshman running back at Washington, Callier rushed for a state-leading 3,010 yards and 45 touchdowns a year ago while leading the Bears to the San Gabriel Valley League title and the Western Division semifinals.

Stepping into the void is Jamill Magee, whose role last season was primarily as a lead blocker for Callier.

All he did Friday as the feature back was carrry 18 times for 181 yards and four TDs in Warren’s 41-39 loss to Burbank to open the season. He gained 309 yards and scored five TDs all of 2009.

Returning quarterback Sam Bettancourt threw a scoring pass and rushed 17 times for 85 yards and a TD. Bettancourt also returned an interception 45 yards.

Josh Callier keyed the defense with 12 tackles (seven solo).

Warren visits Santa Fe Friday.

Downey opened the season with a 33-20 loss to Turlock.

The Vikings host La Serna Friday.

Suburban League
Norwalk, which averaged 47 points per game a year ago, met its match in Los Alamitos Friday.

The Griffins, behind Nick Richardson’s 249 yards and four TDs rushing, kept Norwalk out of the end zone and went on a 34-0 victory in the nonleague contest.

The Lancers had 281 yards on the ground, including 113 from Washington-bound Elijhaa Penny and 98 from Billy Moore.

Dejon Bernard had a 48-yard scoring run for Glenn in its 20-6 loss to Santa Ana Valley.

Bellflower defeated Montebello, 19-14 behind Travis Newberry, who carried 16 times for 100 yards and two TDs. Edgar Ramirez added a 30-yard field goal for the Bucs.

Eastern League
Robert Lewis picked up where he left off last year by scoring three touchdowns, one on a kickoff return, to lead South East to a 35-0 victory over Eagle Rock Thursday in the season football opener for both schools.

Lewis, who rushed for 1,085 yards in 2009, carried 11 times for 109 yards and two scores. He took a kickoff back 82 yards for another TD.

Gilberto Rivera was 7-for-14 for 130 yards and a TD (to Samuel Encarnacion) through the air for the Jaguars.

Christopher Ochoa (11 for 59) and Juan Nevarez (four for 54) also had big games carrying the ball.

Jason Avendano had two interceptions and Malcolm Smith one to lead the defense.

Christian Salazar’s first game South Gate’s coach resulted in a 32-13 loss to Panorama.

The Rams did receive a solid effort from quarterback Emanuel Leyva, who was 15-for-27 for 201 yards and a TD. Ricardo Estrada, who caught the scoring pass, had five receptions for 62 yards. Christian Ramos caught four for 89 yards.

Ernesto Torres led the ground attack with 54 yards and a TD on six rushes.

Huntington Park dropped a close one to Long Beach, 28-26 in its opener.

The Spartans had trouble all night containing Bruin quarterback Brett Harper, who threw for 115 yards and two TDs and ran for 104 and one score.

Around the area
St. John Bosco pounded Mission Hills, 47-12 behind quarterback Raymond Medina, who  was 16-for-21 for 264 yards and three TDs.

Bryce Treggs caught two of the scoring passes and Justin Johnson had the other.

Martin Brown ran for 154 yards and three TDs for the Braves.

Downey Calvary Chapel quarterback Nathan Hearron threw for 327 yards and five TDs as the Grizzlies defeated St. Anthony, 49-29.

Daniel Bradford was on the receiving end of three scoring passes.
