Championship game MVP Felix Gomez pitched a complete game four-hitter with seven strikeouts to lift Houston past Los Angeles, 3-1 Sunday in the finale of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities Senior Division World Series in Jupiter, Fla.
Gomez also contributed a single, stolen base and run in the 16-18 division title game at Roger Dean Stadium, the spring training home of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.
Santo Domingo of the Dominican Republic took the Junior (13-15) Division crown, beating Washington, D.C., 3-1.
“Major League Baseball congratulates the Houston and Santo Domingo RBI teams for winning this year’s championships,” David James, director of the RBI program, said. “Although there is one team per division holding the trophies, all the young players from across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic that participated in the baseball portion of the RBI World Series are champions for the way they played on the field and how they conducted themselves of it.”
Winning pitcher Ricardo Soriano earned Junior Division game MVP honors after striking out eight in 3.2 innings of shutout ball. He allowed two hits and a walk. He fanned seven consecutive batters at one point.
During the Series, a number of L.A. Senior players distinguished themselves.
Daniel Hordo, from Venice High School, had a grand slam and went 3-for-4 in a 10-4 pool play victory over Chicago. He also had a double and two RBIs in their 7-0 semifinal win over Detroit that propelled them into the championship game.
Second baseman Alex Jimenez had two hits each against Chicago, Tampa and Detroit.
Centennial grad and current ECC Compton Center player Josh Lovingood went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases in a 13-5 win over Tampa.
Yamel Delgado (Downey) had two singles, a double and an RBI in the semifinals to support the two-hit shutout pitching of Blake Burrell, who struck out 12.
A standout for Compton’s Junior Division entry was Dominic Smith, who just completed a sensational freshman season at Serra.
In a 9-4 win over Boston, he pitched shutout ball over four innings and went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple in an 8-7 loss to Boston, which scored twice in the top of the seventh.
Catcher Louis Johnson had a home run and single in that game for Compton.
The softball part of the RBI World Series begins Tuesday. Los Angeles is represented.
