L.A. wins RBI Series softball opener

Shanel Tolbert pitched a two-hit shutout to lift Los Angeles past Philadelphia, 2-0 Tuesday in the opening of pool play in the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities World Series for softball in Florida.

L.A. scored in the fourth and sixth innings to support Tolbert, who struck out six and walked two.

Center fielder Alia Williams, the former Crenshaw High School standout, had a double, triple and stolen base and second baseman Leesa Harris, a June graduate of Westchester headed to Cal State Fullerton, had a single and RBI. Each scored a run.

The losing pitcher was Emily Ashbridge, who allowed four hits.

In another opener, Tampa defeated Minnesota, 8-0.

First baseman Brittany Graff went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and shortstop Alyssa Weaver had a triple and two RBIs for Tampa. Mariah Watts struck out seven in three hitless innings for the win.

Emily King pitched a four-hitter to lead Cleveland past Hudson County, 2-1 in another opener.

Puerto Rico edged Houston, 3-2 in the other game. Israeli Marrero had a double and two RBIs to support winning pitcher Maritzabel Gonzalez.
