Playa del Rey in Legion state final

The Playa del Rel Dirty Birds and Long Beach Wilson advanced to the championship game of the American Legion state tournament.

The winner of Monday’s tourney final in the Napa Valley city of Yountville advances to the Western Regionals at Nevada, Las Vegas Aug. 5-9. State winners from Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Hawaii battle it out there for the right to play in the World Series in Spokane, Wash. Aug. 13-17.

A majority of Playa del Rey’s players are from Westchester High School. Other schools represented include Crenshaw, Hamilton, Serra, St. Bernard, San Diego State and Long Beach City College.

In first round of the state tournament, Jamaal Moore (Westchester) pitched seven innings to defeat San Mateo, 4-3.

In game two, Steven Gallardo (Hamilton) pitched all nine innings to top El Dorado, 5-2.

Wave Newspapers Player of the Year Robrt Gsellman (Westchester) was the scheduled starting pitcher in the title game.

Mike Moultrie is Playa del Rey’s manager.

NOTE: Jamaal Moore is one of 80 players from around the country invited to the USA Breakthrough Series this week in Durham, NC.

Along with Jaamal's outstanding complete game defeat of the Eastsiders in the opening game of the Area 6 playoffs at UCLA, Danny Skahill pitched a 6 hitter in the Title game of thec Area 6 Championships to defeat Culver City 19-2. He sent Playa del Rey to Yountville with his gem. Thank you Danny.
