Great things come in small packages. Just ask anybody who faced South East High School’s Robert Lewis.
At 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, the senior running back/defensive back/kick returner didn’t scare opponents with his size. His speed and quickness were another matter.
The future SMU Pony led a school that opened in 2005 to the first City Section championship (Division II) in any sport by piling up some amazing numbers.
The Wave Newspapers East Region Player of the Year carried 203 times for 2,023 yards and 30 TDs, caught 20 passes for 338 yards and four TDs, returned kicks for 742 yards and scored 36 total TDs for 216 points. On defense he had 59 tackles and five interceptions.
In addition, he was the City Division II and Eastern League player of the year.
His coach, Derwin Henderson, is the Wave Coach of the Year.

Dallas Lopez, Downey, 6-1, 175, Sr.
Multi-talented quarterback was 132 of 249 for 2,470 yards and 20 TDs passing and carried 130 times for 1,236 yards and seven TDs.
Jonathan Santos, South East, 6-1, 170, Jr.
Helped lead South East to the City Section Division II title by completing 192 of 310 passes for 2,967 yards and 35 TDs.

Robert Lewis, South East, 5-10, 155, Sr.
The Wave Newspapers East Region player of the year.
Joey Davis, Santa Fe, 6-1, 190, Sr.
The Del Rio League’s co-MVP carried 110 times for 831 yards and seven TDs and caught 21 passes for 204 yards and three TDs. He added another 535 yards on kick returns and scored 12 total TDs for the league champs.
Steven Reed, Glenn, 5-8, 150, Jr.
All-Suburban League running back carried 205 times for 1,560 yards and 15 TDs.
Travis Newberry, Bellflower, 5-6, 157, Sr.
Helped the Bucs to a share of the Suburban League title by rushing for 1,445 yards and eight TDs on 192 carries.
WIDE RECEIVER
Bryce Treggs, St. John Bosco, 6-0, 171, Sr.
Cal-bound Treggs caught 70 passes for 1,377 yards, 11 TDs. The Trinity League co-offensive player of year.
Cyrus Villena, Glenn, 6-0, 165, Jr.
He caught 45 passes for 755 yards, 7 TDs.
LINE
Mark Moreno, Huntington Park, 6-1, 255, Sr.
The first-team All-City Division II pick anchored the Spartans offensive line. The 5-11, 230-pounder also played on the defensive line.
Beau Boyster, St. John Bosco, 6-4, 285, Sr.
The senior center anchored the Braves line. The 6-4, 285-pounder has committed to Arizona.
Cristian Garcia, St. Paul, Jr.
The All-Mission League selection anchored the line for the 7-3 Swordsmen.
Carlos Tovar, Santa Fe, 6-0, 300, Jr.
The 6-0, 300-pounder helped open the holes for the likes of Davis and company. He was first-team All-Del Rio League.
Daniel Herrera, Bell Gardens, 6-0, 230, Sr.
The first-team All-Almont League lineman paved the way for the Lancers to average 251.6 yards per game on the ground.
DEFENSE
LINE
Byron Barahona, Bell, 6-1, 250, Sr.
Barahona was the City Division II defensive lineman of the year and the Eastern League lineman of the year. He recorded 56 tackles, 11.0 sacks and five forced fumbles.
Javier Sandoval, South East, 6-0, 230, Sr.
The Eastern League defensive player of the year and a first-team All-City Division II pick, Sandoval was in on 113 tackles and had 11.0 sacks.
Jason Salesulu, Bellflower, 6-2, 218, Sr.
One of the anchors of the Bellflower defense, Salesulu was in on 82 tackles (58 solo) with 6.0 sacks and five forced fumbles. He returned a fumble 84 yards for a TD.
LINEBACKERS
Jabari Ruffin, Downey, 6-4, 230, Sr.
The high school All-American and future USC Trojan was in on 99 tackles (63 solo) with 1.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. On offense, he caught 42 passes for 549 yards and five TDs and carried 29 times for 196 yards and two scores. He played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Jose Ochoa, Bellflower, 5-11, 212, Sr.
The 5-11, 212-pounder had 65 solos among his 94 total tackles and also had four sacks.
Daniel Belton, South East, 5-10, 175, Soph.
The All-City Division II backer had 115 tackles and 4.0 sacks.
Christian Wehrly, St. John Bosco, 5-11, 201, Jr.
The linebacker helped the Braves go 8-4 by posting 95 tackles (69 solo), a sack, an interception and four passes defended. He was first-team All-Trinity League.
Robert Lemus, Bell, 6-1, 210, Jr.
Lemus was one of the City leaders in tackles with 137. He also had a sack. He was second-team All-Division II.
SECONDARY
Christopher Ochoa, South East, 5-7, 175, Sr.
The senior strong safety had 74 tackles and three interceptions to earn All-City Division II honors. He caught 38 passes for 525 yards and five TDs as a wide receiver.
Christian Mahlstede, Santa Fe, 6-3, 185, Sr.
The Del Rio League’s co-MVP had three interceptions and 21 tackles from his safety spot. On offense, the 6-3, 185-pounder had 29 receptions for 522 yards and five TDs and another 121 yards on 20 carries.
Bernard Foy, Paramount, 5-9, 170, Sr.
Foy intercepted six passes, returning them 137 yards, defensed five other passes, forced a fumble and was in on 23 tackles (20 solo) for the San Gabriel Valley League tri-champs (with Dominguez and Downey).
Diamonte Wiggins, Lynwood, 6-3, 165, Sr.
The quarterback/safety was the leader on both sides of the ball for the Knights this season. Boise State, New Mexico and Washington have made offers to Wiggins, according to rivals.com.
