A team of United States all-stars faces a similar group from Japan in a three-game friendship series Saturday through Monday at the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in Compton.

Former Dodgers all-star first baseman Steve Garvey, whose son, Ryan, plays for the U.S. team, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to game one, scheduled for noon Saturday.

The U.S. roster includes infielder Desmond Henry and Daniel Arellano of Centennial High School, pitcher Mike Martin of Cathedral, infielders Ron Miller and Dominic Smith of Serra, infielder Mark Silva of Paramount and pitcher Marcos Lara of Compton College.

Vic Harris, a former major leaguer who played in Japan, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to game two, which is at 1 p.m. Sunday. Game three is at 1 p.m. Monday.

Last time they hosted the U.S.A. and Japan showed up with 6 of their best left handed pitchers on their 17 man roster, all Nationaly recognized High School All Stars. We got creamed. Where's the beef?
