Crenshaw High School students participated in a planned walkout Friday afternoon to protest budget cuts that they say will have a negative impact on their school by laying off teachers, counselors and other support staff.

I am a teacher at a school like Crenshaw in Miami, Florida. Thank you so much Crenshaw students for standing up for your teachers and demanding adequate funding for your schools. That took courage on your part. As Dr. Gibson wrote, you have the right to learn useful things and the truth about our government. Every dollar spent in Iraq and Afghanistan is a dollar stolen from you. Close down the schools until the wars are ended, and build a country based on peace and justice for working people.

We need hundreds of walkouts like this. Shut down the schools, then start freedom schools where teachers have the freedom to teach about important things like the relationship of war and budget crises---and students have a reason to learn things that make sense.
